Yesterday I finished reading A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. It is a fantastic novel of past and present, of intertwining characters and the complex relationship between reader and writer, of Zen Buddhism and quantum physics - in particular the ‘many worlds’ theory of Hugh Everett.

Today I wandered into a bookshop and picked up the biography of Mark Oliver Everett (Mr E of Eels). I started reading it on the Tube home - on page eleven he mentions his father, Hugh Everett.

It was one of those little coincidences that makes the world a much more interesting place.

Very sad news about Iain Banks today.

Reading his novels as a teenager was one of things that lured me to Glasgow University, where as an undergraduate I studied ‘The Bridge’, written under his science fiction (not so) nom de plume, Iain M. Banks.

As a postgraduate student, I met Iain whilst volunteering at the Oxford Literary Festival. Rather embarrassingly, I asked him for his ticket on the door to his own event, to which he bemusedly replied, ‘I am the talent!’

Now, as a thirty-something working in the publishing industry, I am sad to hear that he will be leaving us.
